How You Find the Perfect Golf Swing

Of the millions of people who have played the game, a staggeringly small number could wilfully hit the ball where they aimed. Only two!. Who were they?
The first, and most known one was Ben Hogan. The other is Moe Norman. Moe Norman has enjoyed almost mythical status as a ball striker. He was a Canadian pro who rarely left his home country but was well known to all the top touring pros from Lee Trevino and Nick Price all the way to present day superstar, Tiger Woods.
Like many of you, I have only seen Ben Hogan on video and in the slo-mo footage I have acquired over the years. Moe, on the other hand, I saw in person on a number of occasions both during tournament play and at clinics he gave later in his career.
For two days I was in Moe’s group during a tournament in Ontario because I was looping for Alvie Thompson, an accomplished Canadian Tour player in the 1960’s and 70’s.
What made these two players so unique? What made them unique?
Firstly let’s recognize how rare their skills were. Millions have enjoyed the game over the years, however, only two gentlemen could consistently hit the ball where they aimed.
Regrettably, the mainsteam golfing community never really got to know Moe and that distance was further magnified by the way he was depicted in the press. His frequent feuding with the RCGA, the ruling body of golf in Canada, did not enhance his image or endear him to the public.Few were interested in what Moe had to say about the golf swing given the fact that he looked so unorthodox over the ball. Because Moe spoke in riddle and repeated himself habitually, few bothered to try to examine what he was trying to say. Virtally no one was interested in what Moe had to say about the golf swing notwithstanding his undeniable skill.The best you could get were bits and pieces of insight but nothing comprehensive bordering on a methodology.
Recently, a whole new generation of golf teachers have rediscovered Moe and are now attempting to reconstruct the man’s great swing. Rival swing theories have emerged, each proclaiming to have unlocked the secrets to Moe’s unique and powerful swing . The claims of offering golfing nirvana based on Moe’s swing have been greatly exaggerated and are, frankly, disappointing.
Unlike what is taught today, the actual Moe Norman swing was powerful and had a distinct sound coming off the clubface. Few of the methods which purport to piggyback on Moe’s move replicate the man’s powerful action through the ball . I, like others, have experimented with the new theories and abandoned them after experiencing a marked lack of distance.

In my youth, I caddied on one of the minor pro tours. You will recall that Moe and my pro were two thirds of the day’s pairing in a pro event. Beyond being a reclusive individual, Moe exhibited the patience of a toddler when it came to the ponderous pace of tournament golf. I could empathize with Moe roving and vocalizing to himself to pass the time. He would often drop 5 or 6 balls into a bunker on a just played hole and spank them out to keep himself amused. Where other players might pace about, Moe was more unusual in the manner in which he expressed his nervous tension.
Through the years the stories of Moe’s behaviour and decorum have multiplied to the point that it is now difficult to sift fact from fiction. You have to be more than suspicious if the stories come from former tour caddies! The anecdotes and recollections might be fictional at best but what is factual is the man was a ball striking machine. And he continued to amaze and mesmerise galleries and onlookers alike with his unerring prowess well into his senior years.

Unless you saw Moe hit balls live, you really cannot appreciate how special he was . I volunteered to shag balls (in the era before motorized ball pickers) for Moe during a local exhibition.An demonsration that drew sadly only a handful of spectators. With monotonous regularity, each ball he hit about one bounce away from us.Moe would reposition us when he changed clubs and the balls would again fall like arrows. Words do no justice in trying to capture the enormity of his skill.

No two men were more different than Moe and Hogan. Inasmuch as Moe was eccentric, Ben Hogan was both aloof and dismissive. Though Moe struggled to explain the elements of his great ball striking, Ben Hogan, by contrast, made no concerted attempt to share his secrets with the rest of the golfing fraternity.Mountains of text and video have been assembled in an attempt to explain the Hogan swing. The mystery of the Hogan swing has been an elusive quest which has consumed hundreds of golfers for over a half century.
Perhaps to Mr Hogan’s satisfaction, no one has fully revealed the intracacies of his swing. Hogan has many imitators but few would claim that they are true exhibitors of the method. It is likely that Hogan would not be dissatisfied with the current state of affairs . Like an Eastern mystic, he advised those who sought his knowledge to find it themselves by digging it out of the dirt. You could never mistake Ben Hogan as a kindly father determined to patiently share his accumulated knowledge with his offspring.
Hogan was not filled with bon homie and a gentle nature. Hogan was an island surrounded by inhospitable waters.Few people, including his peers ever got close to Ben Hogan.Hogan was always a distant personality among the players of his generation. Unlike a Freddy or an Arnie, he is not embraced by the golfing public. He refused to reciprocate the warmth and admiration of the galleries.
Let's ask again whether there is a perfect golf swing?
The perfect swing exists . The swing can be described and almost mastered!
Can you explain what you mean? Well, without understanding what the human body can and does do, you are at a disadvantage. As well, you must grasp the physics that come to bear on this swinging motion. Do I need to be a rocket scientist!
