How to Recognize the Perfect Golf Swing

Only two players in golf could on command hit the golf ball straight. Only two!.Do you know who they were?
Most hard core golfers would quickly identify Ben Hogan. Moe Norman is the name of the other golfer. Norman was an underground legend. He was a Canadian pro who rarely left his home country but was well known to all the top touring pros from Lee Trevino and Nick Price all the way to present day superstar, Tiger Woods.
My exposure to Ben Hogan has been through my ever enlarging collection of dvds and online videos. As a teenager, I saw Moe play several times in Canada and I saw him again much later in his career when he gave clinics around the country.
For two days I was in Moe’s group during a tournament in Ontario because I was looping for Alvie Thompson, an accomplished Canadian Tour player in the 1960’s and 70’s.
What made these two players so different? Why is it that they were so different?
Firstly let’s recognize how rare their skills were. Millions have played the game over the years, however, only two gentlemen could consistently hit the ball where they aimed.
Moe was certainly a challenge to understand because of his personality and he was awkward in most social situations.
Moe’s cause was not aided by the fact that he frequently butted heads with the ruling board of governors and that such disagreements became quite public.
Because of his eccenticities, Moe struggled to explain the intracacies of his swing. Because Moe spoke in riddle and repeated himself habitually, few bothered to try to examine what he was trying to say. Despite his prodigous talent as a player, it was exceedingly rare that anyone would take the time with Moe to unlock the secrets of his incredible swing. It was difficult at best to weave a comprehensible swing theory from the thought fragments that Moe shared from time to time.
In the past decade or so, a whole new group of teachers and players have discovered Moe and have set about to piece and parse together exactly what the man meant.
This has led to the emergence of a number of competing “swing theories”, each purporting to have uncovered the Da Vinci Code that is Moe’s swing . Unfortunately, these theories are often the product of well paid copywriting which promises much but delivers little.
Make no mistake, Moe’s move was both powerful and explosive through the ball. Few of the methods which purport to piggyback on Moe’s move replicate the man’s powerful action through the ball .
Ever the tinkerer, I have explored these methods and like many of my fellow golfers I experienced a significant loss of distance in all clubs throughout the bag.

When I had a strong back and a weak mind, I used to practice the darkest of the dark arts; that of being a caddy on the minor tour(it certainly wasn’t for the money!). You will remember that I once was a caddy in Moe’s group at a pro tournament.
Patience was not Moe’s long suit when it came to the pace of play among pros. I could empathize with Moe roving and vocalizing to himself to pass the time. To cope with the tedium, Moe was constantly dropping balls down wherever and chipping them . Where other players might pace about, Moe was more unusual in the manner in which he expressed his nervous tension.
The overlay of myth has now come to shroud the actual behaviour of Moe during his tournament playing days. You have to be a bit suspect when there are now more stories than there were witnesses back in the day! The anecdotes and recollections might be fictional at best but what is factual is the man was a ball striking machine. Remarkably, long into his senior years Moe still struck the ball with potency and purity.
Unless you saw Moe hit balls live, you really cannot appreciate how special he was . In the days when exhibitions were up close and personal, I had the chance to shag balls for Moe.It was disappointing that so few people came out that day to see truly one of the greatest ball strikers of this or any era. So accurate was the man that he literally was bouncing the balls at the feet of my colleague and myself.Moe would reposition us when he changed clubs and the balls would again fall like arrows. Words do no justice in trying to portray the enormity of his skill.

What a divide separates these two golfing legends. Where one struggled to communicate, the other failed to communicate. Though Moe struggled to explain the elements of his great ball striking, Ben Hogan, by contrast, made no concerted attempt to share his secrets with the rest of the golfing fraternity. It seems each month some one new comes out of the shadows proclaiming that he has uncovered the mystery that is Hogan. The mystery of the Hogan swing has been an elusive quest which has consumed hundreds of golfers for over a half century.
Perhaps to Mr Hogan’s satisfaction, no one has fully revealed the intracacies of his swing. No one presumes to be teaching the comprehensive Hogan action. It is likely that Hogan would not be dissatisfied with the current state of affairs . Hogan shunned any attempt to engage him to share his vast knowledge. If Hogan was teaching you to garden, he’d throw you a rake.
Hogan was not filled with bon homie and a gentle nature. And in fairness, he didn’t seek it in others.Few people, including his peers ever got close to Ben Hogan.Hogan did not bridge the gap between himself and the fans of the game
