Understanding The Mental Game Of Golf

As golfers, we are always striving to perfect our game. It is a continual battle for improvement that seams never ending. Even the professional golfers are constantly working on their game. That shows you how difficult golf can be when you see even the pros struggling to maintain a constant level.

Do you know that only about 5% of golfers Worldwide can break 70? What do those golfers have that we don’t? According to golf manufacturers and their advertising claims, we need the same expensive golf equipment that the pros use to play to their level.

That obviously is marketing hype, as you can now pick up the same driver that a PGA star used last year for under $200. So, many of us do have technologically advanced clubs and golf balls that the pros use; why are we still unable to break 70 or even 80?

30 years ago 25% of golfers broke 90 and today that number has only risen to 28%. Billions have been spent on developing new technologically advanced golf clubs and balls. Also, millions have been spent by advertisers trying to push these products on the unsuspecting golfer.

So we now have these clubs that are easier to use, are more forgiving, have higher launch angles, plus golf balls that combine optimum distance, spin and feel. And yet the vast bulk of golfers are still struggling to break the 90 barrier! It seams that a great golf game can not be bought; not even with all the golf swing guides, hundreds of new golf training aids, or up to date instruction methods.

Something tells me that the top 5% of golfers know something that we don’t. It appears that that “thing” that they possess is mastery of the Mental Game of Golf. That is the missing ingredient that can promote the quickest and most lasting change in any golfer’s game. It is interesting to note that this is the only area that doesn’t cost a penny to use, however hardly anyone uses it.

The mental golf game: Using your mind in a calculated, methodical and focused way is the surest method of improving your game and lowering your scores. Mastering the Inner Game of Golf can do wonders for your game. But you have to understand how to implement the methods.

After you do, you will have confidence in yourself and your game, be able to control your attention, cure your golf nerves and anxiety, have clear focus and mental toughness, and eliminate anger from your game – plus many more benefits.

Knowledge of the mental game of golf is what separates the top 5% of golfers from the rest of us. You can see it in action on the PGA Tour because all those guys have access to the same equipment, golf swing gurus, and putting instructors. The difference between them comes down to how well they master their mental game of golf during each tournament.

Obviously, at their level and with all the pressure and media coverage, it is difficult for them to maintain high levels of concentration and focus week after week, year after year. That is why even the likes of Tiger Woods can not win every major in a year or even dominate the majority of events in a season, every season.

But for mere mortals like us, understanding and using the mental game of golf techniques can have an immediate and long lasting positive affect on our game. Believe me, it is the quickest way to lower your scores and take your game to a higher level. If you would like more information on how to start, then read How to Learn the Mental Game of Golf. The Simple Golf Swing

You will be aware that there are many aspects and many skills to master in the game of golf. Probably, mastering the golf swing is the most fundamental part of your golfing developmentl. The hours spent perfecting this vital skill will ultimately prove to be invaluable. The golf swing is to many golfers one of the most, if not the most, frustrating aspects of the game of golf.

Golfers are often changing their swing to get more distance or to correct problems like a slice or a hook. Actually, though, the golf swing is just a matter of mechanics and arranging body motions together in the correct way to be consistent. But experienced golfers understand this is easier said than done.

Let us consider the basics of a good golf swing

* Your starting position should be roughly shoulder width apart and your feet should be pointing slightly out – but not too much!

* Allow your arms to hang naturally down from your body and place the club behind the ball. If your shoulders hunch over or you have tenseness in your arms, you are in all probability too close to the ball. Keep one’s distance a little bit.

* Put about 70 percent of your body weight on your back leg.

* Straighten out your spine and have a little bit of a bend in your knees.

* Keep your eye on the ball during your entire swing

* Hold the club as if you are carrying a small, fragile bird. You want to hold the bird in your hands, but you do not want to squash it either. That is how you should hold your club.

* An effective golf swing will be a fluent, comfortable motion with your shoulders turning slightly in the backswing and your follow-through complete.

* Make certain you keep your feet planted and slow down in your backswing.  Just about all problems with a golf swing are induced by swinging too quickly in the back swing and then not accelerating through the ball.

* The intention will always be to hit the ball in the center. Hitting it anywhere else will cause your ball to travel in directions that you really don’t want it to go in. And we all know how frustrating that is.

* Then grip it and let it rip!

You may feel that taking a lesson or two will be an advantage, or watching how the experts do it on the television will help. There are many articles that exist on the Internet that can help you with your golf swing, so always look for any tips available and take as much advice as you can get. And always, always, always practice. And after you have practised, then practice some more.

Learning to swing a golf club takes years of practice as any keen golfer will tell you. There are loads of things to know and master and they all have to be working in exactly the right ways at exactly the right time to a have a good, consistent golf swing. Sometimes this just doesn’t happen, but when it does, you will feel fantastic! Just stick at it and don’t get too down-hearted if you do not get it right straightaway. If you stick to the principles and are committed to the effort and the practice you will get it right.

Above all else, enjoy your golf. As we all know it is one great game to play.
